2010 Singles Ministry Challenge:
Jesus said “WHEN you give, WHEN you pray & WHEN you fast.”
In Matthew 6:1-16, during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus assumed his followers would do these three things. Our challenge to the Singles at Liberty Bible Church is to do these three things in 2010. We will help. We will give you opportunities to do these things together.
GIVE – regular giving of your time & money: we will have a monthly service project
PRAY – one Saturday morning every month we will have a breakfast and prayer time
FAST – we are asking you to fast from something for a total of 40 days in the coming year
The Details:
Giving – we will have a monthly service project where you’ll have an opportunity to give your time to serving others in our community. Money? We ALL need more of it, but we are also told to give back to God out of what we have been given. You will be encouraged to tithe some amount to a ministry of your choosing.
Praying – we will have a prayer breakfast once a month where we will pray for a wide variety of things. Also, we are encouraging you to come up with a list of 10 things to pray for daily. Through the year we will remind you to pray for your list. If you like, you can turn your list into Matt (or Nicole) for added accountability.
Fasting – are you serious? Many of you are asking that question right now. Fasting is not only about not eating food. You can fast (temporarily give up) a number of things. Our stuff can easily become too important to us. Giving up music, TV, cell phone or even food a few days each month will be a great experience.
Why? Why should we pursue these three disciplines this coming year?
1st – As mentioned earlier, Jesus assumed his followers would do these things. We often fall into the trap of thinking that our faith in Christ is only a belief in Christ. There should be some action that goes along with our belief & faith. Obedience is more than not just sinning.
2nd – Were you happy with 2009? I wasn’t. Do you sense that God wants to do more in your life? I do. I for one don’t want to live this coming year like I did this past year. I want to show God I’m serious about my faith. I want to see God do amazing things IN me this coming year
3rd – This will be a great opportunity to impact others lives this year. Serving others and praying aggressively for others will mean God will be working THROUGH us and not just in us. These things done in secret, we are not to do them to gain attention or earn favor with God. But others will benefit from our commitment.
“Something” is the Key Word (notes on Fasting & Giving):
When he started his ministry Jesus fasted from food for 40 days. We are asking you to consider fasting from something for 40 days this year – but not 40 consecutive days. If you give up something for 7 days in January & then 3 days each month this year, that totals 40 days of fasting. Fasting from food is a serious thing and not for everyone. But fasting from other things that are important to you and draw your attention away from God will be an incredible experience.
In regards to giving, we want to encourage you to give your time and money. Giving even $5 a week would be a great discipline and an act of obedience. Showing God that you trust him with your finances during this difficult economic time will be a big deal. We are not going to be legalistic about giving 10% of your income but we want to encourage you to give something each month. You will be challenged to give – but never asked directly if you have given.
