Fearfully and Wonderfully Made
September 15, 2009
For the longest time I just sat there, holding her and watching her sleep on my chest.
She was, of course, just beautiful. And as I looked at her, I marveled at her soft skin, her little fingers, her dark hair and her delicate features.
Her name is Hazel Grace. She is our fourth grandchild and I was in love as I gazed at her just a few hours after her birth.
I couldn’t help but think, that very special day only two and a half weeks ago, how amazing it was that she was here, whole and complete.
I still marvel at what takes place in a woman’s womb.
An egg and sperm unite and a new life is formed. Over the next nine months, cells divide and divide again. Some form “inner parts” while other cells become “outside parts.”
How do they all know to go to the right places?
As we looked at this new little bundle of life and joy, everything was there and it was all in the right place.
Two eyes, two ears, a nose and a mouth. Ten fingers and ten toes. We counted and we marveled and we rejoiced.
One moment she was floating inside her mother, being given nourishment and oxygen through a cord to her stomach.
Then comes a wrenching trip through the birth canal and, for the first time, she breathes, pulling oxygen into lungs that, only a moment earlier, had never expanded much less been called on to support life.
But she expanded those lungs and let out a good cry. Yep, those parts are working.
She’s eating now, every two or three hours. I guess all the “inner parts” are working properly too because she’s already added a couple of pounds to her birth weight.
This is no coincidence, no evolutionary developmental process. This is God!
Listen to the psalmist:
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,
Your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book
Before one of them came to be.
Psalm 139:14-16
Welcome, Hazel Grace! You are made in the image of God, the handiwork of God, and a gift of God. May you learn to love him even as he loves you.
It is an amazing thing to hold God’s handiwork in your hands. Whether it is your child, grandchild, nephew or niece, may we never lose the wonder of the miracle of life. And may we be quick to give God praise and thanks for this gift.
Cheerfully.
